7 Aum Arivu (The Seventh Sense) is a high-concept Tamil science fiction action thriller that left a permanent mark on Indian cinema. Released on October 25, 2011, for Diwali, the film was directed by A.R. Murugadoss and starred Suriya in a powerful dual role alongside Shruti Haasan in her Tamil debut.

Suriya delivered a career-defining performance that few actors could pull off. In the scenes, you witness:

Upon release, critics praised the concept but felt the second half was rushed. However, time has been kind. Retrospective reviews now call it "ahead of its time." In an era where Pan-Indian films are the norm, 7 Aum Arivu attempted a pan-Asian story (India-China connect) a decade before it became fashionable.

The film opens with a stunning 20-minute sequence following Bodhidharma (Suriya), a Tamil prince from the Pallava dynasty. He travels to China, where he masters medicine and martial arts, eventually becoming the founder of Zen and the Shaolin Temple.

The movie is packed with memorable moments that contributed to its success:

The narrative of 7 Aum Arivu operates on two distinct timelines. The film opens in the 6th century, introducing Bodhidharma (played by Suriya), a Pallava prince from Kanchipuram who travels to China. He masters martial arts, ancient medicine, and hypnotism, ultimately saving a Chinese village from a deadly plague and training the monks of the Shaolin Temple. Fast forward to the 21st century, and the Chinese government launches "Operation Red," sending an assassin named Dong Lee (Johnny Tri Nguyen) to unleash a biological weapon in India.

Perhaps the film’s biggest contribution to pop culture was its portrayal of Bodhidharma. Before 7 Aum Arivu , many Indians were unaware that the founder of Zen Buddhism and the legendary Shaolin Kung Fu was a prince from the Pallava dynasty of Kanchipuram.

Unlike regular masala films, 7 Aum Arivu takes a bold risk. The story is split into two timelines:
